Coyote Sightings
Recently, we have received an increase of reports in Coyote sightings within Wanis View. Specifically, a noted increase in sightings on Wala and Toopal during all hours of the day.
A few reminders on how to keep yourself and your pets safe from Coyotes:
Be safe:
What to do if you are approached by coyotes:
If you or your pets are approached by a coyote, try to intimidate and frighten the coyote by shouting loudly, clapping, waving your arms, and even throwing objects. If possible, pick your pet up. If you have a jacket or coat on, spread the clothing out to make you appear as large as possible. If you need to retreat, do so by backing up slowly while keeping eye contact with the coyote.
If your pet does come in contact or is bitten by a coyote, immediately wash the area or bite with warm soapy water. While most coyotes are healthy, there is a risk of infection or exposure to rabies. Get medical attention immediately.
A few reminders on how to keep yourself and your pets safe from Coyotes:
Be safe:
- Keep your dog on a leash.
- Remove sources of water.
- Thin bushes around your house to reduce areas for coyotes and their prey to hide.
- Pick all ripe fruit from trees, and avoid letting the fruit fall and remain on the ground.
- Clean and maintain bird feeders. Spilled seeds attract rodents and rabbits, coyotes’ main sources of nutrition.
- Pets should be fed indoors but if you do feed your pets outdoors, make sure to empty the dishes afterwards.
- Put garbage in tightly closed containers that cannot be tipped over.
- Install motion-sensitive lights around your house.
